Last Saturday (14 January 2012), we saw at least 3-4 Razorbills (Alca torda) wintering
near Salé's offshore waters.
In
Morocco, the razorbill Alca torda is a uncommon wintor visitor which is more
regular in the far north of the country i.e from Merja Zerga to Tangier
affoshores. However, the Razorbill becomes less regular in southern
latitudes. Few dozens of birds were
recorded in January 2006 near the Mogador isalands off Essaouira (I. Cherkaoui).

I did'nt realise they were that scarce, will keep my eyes peeled when next over further South.

We saw 4 Razorbill Alca at Tarfaya, last december.

Hi,
ReplyDeleteMay be because they don't come close enough to the coasts
Best

They are pelagic birds indeed, but in the lower latitudes they become even scarcer, so the observation of Karim and his colleagues is a good one too. They are nice birds to see, as I haven’t seen one yet.
