On 7 June 2012, Rachid El Khamlichi photographed an unfortunate Moroccan Marsh Owl (Asio
capensis tingitanus) that was road-killed near a locality
called Larbaa Ayacha which is situated on the road between Tétouan and
Larache at about 40 Km NE of lower Loukkos marshes where these owls are known
to breed.
This observation shows
again that some Marsh Owls still roaming north of lower Loukkos wetland (e.g.
seen near lower Tahaddart in 2006 and 2007 by Qninba et
al., and at Oued Martil in October 2011 by Rachid).
This exchange of individuals (source-sink relationship) between the lower Loukkos - Merja Zerga area and the northernmost sites is good for preventing the extinction of this nationally Critically Endangered owl from these sites.
