Andalusian
Buttonquail (Turnix sylvaticus sylvaticus), a species with discrete habits, has lost
most of its range in the Mediterranean over the
past decades. In Spain, it is probably extinct.
For years Spanish teams began searching the species in Morocco. It
was found in a coastal area south of El Jadida, along the Atlantic, both in patches of natural vegetation and in crops. Since
2010, SEO/BirdLife conducts and coordinates conservation activities of theAndalusian Buttonquail in Morocco.
Recently our colleagues at BirdLife MoroccoCountry Programme resumed field surveys in Oued Rargh. This area
until now thought to be a wintering habitat and the Andalusian Buttonquail performs local
movements between the coast and the interior.
These field surveys are the initial stage of a three-year
study that seeks to reduce and offset the potential effect of the new highway between El Jadida and Safi.

Le Turnix d'Andalousie (ou Turnix mugissant), une
espèce au habitudes discrètes, a perdu la plupart de son aire de répartition dans
la Méditerranée au cours des dernières décennies. En Espagne, il est probablement
éteinte.
Pendant des années, des équipes espagnoles ont
commencé à rechercher l'espèce au Maroc. Il a été trouvé dans une région
côtière au sud de El Jadida, le long de l'Atlantique, à la fois dans des parcelles de végétation naturelle et dans les champs de cultures. Depuis 2010, SEO/BirdLife dirige et coordonne les activités de conservation de Turnix d'Andalousie au Maroc.
Récemment, nos collègues de BirdLife Morocco Country Programme ont repris des
études de terrain au niveau de Oued Rargh. Cette zone est considérée jusqu'à
présent comme un habitat d'hivernage et le Turnix d'Andalousie effectue des
mouvements locaux entre la côte et l'intérieur. Ces prospections de terrain sont
la première phase d'une étude de trois ans qui vise à réduire et compenser l'effet
potentiel de la nouvelle autoroute entre El Jadida et Safi.
